ENFL Awards

This award recognizes distinguished contributions to fundamental or engineering energy related research and development and education that address the world's energy and chemical challenges.

The purpose of this annual award is to recognize distinguished or outstanding contributions by an individual to fundamental or engineering energy related research and development and education that address the world's energy and chemical challenges. Areas of interest include hydrocarbon fuels, energy storage, renewable energy sources, and production of energy via such methods as fuel cells and solar photovoltaics, and the award is granted regardless of race, gender, age, religion, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, gender expression, gender identity, presence of disabilities, and educational background. The award consists of $5,000 and a certificate, plus up to $2,500 for travel expenses (maximum) to the ACS National Meeting at which the award will be presented and the recipient will deliver an award address at a symposium of the ACS Division of Energy and Fuels (ENFL).

The ACS Energy & Fuels (ENFL) Division Distinguished Researcher Award recognizes excellence in basic or applied research and significant, original contributions in energy and fuels chemistry.

This award recognizes excellence in basic or applied research in energy and fuels chemistry, evidenced by significant and original contributions that have advanced the field, including leadership, publications, patents, invention, or commercialization of new technologies. Nominees must also demonstrate contributions to ACS and the Energy and Fuels Division or its predecessors, such as serving as an invited speaker, presenter, or symposium organizer, and must be current members in good standing of both the American Chemical Society and the Energy and Fuels Division. The award consists of $2,000, a plaque, and a ticket to the Division dinner, with the awardee recognized during an Award Symposium at the Spring ACS National Meeting. Nominations must be submitted by July 15th.

The Distinguished Service award recognizes individuals who have had a significant and continued impact on the advancement of energy and fuels chemistry through research, teaching, or service.

The Distinguished Service award is limited to individuals who have been members of the division for at least ten years and who have had, in the opinion of the selection committee, a significant and continued impact on the advancement of energy and fuels chemistry through research, teaching, service or a combination of the three over an extended period of time. The award consists of $1000 and a suitably engraved plaque. It is granted without regard to age, sex or nationality. In addition, no one who has served as Past Chair, Chair, Chair-Elect, Secretary or Treasurer in the award year or two prior years is eligible.

The Emerging Researcher Award recognizes sustained and distinguished contributions to the field of fuel chemistry.

The American Chemical Society Division of Energy & Fuels established this Emerging Researcher Award to recognize sustained and distinguished contributions to the field of fuel chemistry, intending to encourage scientists who are early or midway into their careers. The award consists of $1000, a plaque commemorating the award, and a ticket to the Division dinner. Eligibility is normally restricted to nominees with no more than 10 years after their last degree or post doc, who must be current members in good standing of the American Chemical Society and Energy & Fuels Division.

The American Chemical Society Division of Energy & Fuels Mid-Career Award recognizes sustained and distinguished contributions to the field of energy and fuel chemistry.

Established in 2021 by the American Chemical Society Division of Energy & Fuels, this award aims to recognize and encourage scientists midway into their careers who have made sustained and distinguished contributions to the field of energy and fuel chemistry. The award comprises $1500, a commemorative plaque, a half-day symposium, and a ticket to the Division dinner. Eligibility typically requires nominees to be no more than 10-25 years after their last degree or Post Doc, with the award based on both their research record and service to the division or profession. Nominees must also be current members in good standing of the American Chemical Society and its Energy and Fuels Division, and nominations may be carried forward for up to three years of eligibility.

The ACS Energy & Fuels (ENFL) Division Research Excellence Award in Electrochemical Energy Storage (EES Award), sponsored by CAPCHEM TECHNOLOGY USA INC. (CAPCHEM), recognizes excellence in electrochemical energy storage research by mid-career scientists who have also made significant contributions to the ACS ENFL Division.

The primary purpose of the ACS Energy & Fuels (ENFL) Division Research Excellence Award in Electrochemical Energy Storage (EES Award), sponsored by CAPCHEM TECHNOLOGY USA INC. (CAPCHEM), is to promote excellence in electrochemical energy storage research and to recognize and support scientists affiliated with the ACS ENFL Division who are 10-20 years into their careers after their last degree. Nominees must be current members in good standing of the American Chemical Society and the Energy and Fuels Division, demonstrating excellence in basic or applied research in electrochemical energy storage and significant contributions to the Division and ACS. The award consists of $2,000, a plaque, two tickets to the Division dinner, and up to $1,500 to support the awardee’s registration, airfare, and lodging. The awardee is announced at the ACS Fall Meeting of the award year, with an Award Symposium held in their honor at the following ACS National Meeting.

The ACS Fellows Program recognizes members of the American Chemical Society for outstanding achievements in and contributions to Science, the Profession, and the Society.

The ACS Fellows Program was established by the Board of Directors in December 2008 to recognize members of the American Chemical Society for their outstanding achievements in and contributions to Science, the Profession, and the Society. Ultimately, the body of Fellows is intended to reach approximately 1-2% of ACS membership. These ACS Fellows are members of ENFL and are nominated by the Division. The ENFL Fellows committee accepts suggestions for nominees in January, subsequently forwarding cases to the ENFL Executive committee for approval, and the division summits the nominee packages to the ACS in late March.

The R.A. Glenn Award recognizes the most innovative and interesting paper presented at each ACS national meeting.

Established in 1956 by the Division of Fuel Chemistry in cooperation with Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., this award was named in 1972 in honor of Richard A. Glenn, who served as Assistant Director of Research at Bituminous Coal Research, Inc. and as Chairman of the Fuel Chemistry Division in 1960. All papers presented at Energy and Fuels Division symposia are considered, with symposia chairs nominating up to two (2) papers from their sessions that represent innovative and interesting original new work. A selection committee then reviews all the nominated papers and attends the presentations, selecting the recipient based on the oral presentation and technical excellence.

Co-sponsored by ACS Publications and ENFL, the Energy Lectureship rotates annually among ACS Energy Letters, ACS Applied Energy Materials, and Energy & Fuels, recognizing outstanding contributions to energy research.
